LGBTQ Activists Set Their Sights Even Higher After Supreme Court Ruling on Same-Sex Marriage

When the United States Supreme Court ruled on the Obergefell v. Hodges case on June 26th, 2015, the nation's history would be changed forever as same-sex couples were granted the right to marry, regardless of the state they lived in. LGBTQ activists from coast to coast celebrated with rainbow-colored flags and banners and started to use the hashtag #LoveWins across social media. But even as people still celebrate and the opposition still stands firm against the ruling, many activists are saying their fight for equality has only just begun.

The Campaign Does Not End at Marriage Rights

One of the most pressing issues that LGBTQ activists say they and the country need to focus on is discrimination law. Only 22 states, including California, have antidiscrimination laws in place that protect employees from retaliation or punishment in the workplace based on their sexual orientation. Some activists say that it is simply unacceptable for more than half of the country to allow someone to be fired for this reason. They go on to say that it could quickly become a heated issue if opponents of the Supreme Court's ruling lash out against the LGBTQ members in their employ.

Other issues that seem to concern the LGBTQ community as a whole include transgender rights, homelessness, and therapy for the confused or suicidal. Some activists feel they still need to keep an eye on their newfound marriage rights, as those against the Supreme Court's decision are already trying to repeal them.

With so much debate surrounding same-sex marriage rights and other LGBTQ concerns, it is understandable for people to need help with family law now more than ever. At The Law Offices of Beatriz A. Pelayo-Garcia, our Montebello divorce attorneys can handle all of your concerns, from child custody agreements and alimony modifications to legal separations and property division.
